Chinese Student VisaTo undertake a regular course of study at a university in China, you must apply for a "long-term" China Student Visa. This visa is initially issued for a single entry into China and must be converted into a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. Typically, the residence permit is granted for one year initially but can be extended easily if studies continue. The residence permit allows for multiple entries and exits from China.

Purpose of Travel: Studying in China
Duration of Stay: More than 180 days
Number of Entries: Multiple (upon conversion to a residence permit)
Validity Period: 90 days from issuance until entry into China

Documents Required to Apply for the Long-Term Student Visa (X1 Visa):

  1. Completed visa application (exclusively online since May 2019)
  2. Coloured, biometric passport photo against a light background (digitally inserted into the online form and optionally printed on photo paper, approx. 1.4 x 1.8 inches)
  3. Passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity and one blank page for the visa (two blank pages are necessary for double or multiple entries)
  4. An original admission letter from the university or academy where you will begin your studies. The admission letter must include the full address of the institution on the letterhead, as well as your name, date of birth, and the start and end dates of your course. It must also be signed and stamped with a registered seal. The admission letter must be presented in its original form during the visa application and sent from China by post. A printed scan is not accepted.
  5. The original JW202 (JW201) form. This document is issued by state-recognized universities and delivered along with your admission letter. It consists of several copies and must be signed by you. It must be presented in its original form during the visa application – i.e., it must be sent from China by post. A printed scan is not accepted.

Conversion to a Residence Permit:

Upon arrival in China with an X1 Visa, you must convert it into a residence permit at the local police station or foreign affairs office. This conversion allows for the flexibility of multiple entries and the extension of your stay as you continue your studies.
