Since late 2014, Myanmar has simplified entry for international visitors by introducing the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This system allows travellers to enter Myanmar without the traditional paper visa but requires an online registration to be completed at least 96 hours before arrival and can be done up to 90 days before the planned entry. Upon arrival at one of the three international airports—Yangon, Mandalay, or Nay Pyi Taw—the online registration is converted into a visa.
The ETA offers numerous advantages over the traditional visa application process:
With the ETA, you can stay in Myanmar for tourist purposes for up to 28 days. Business travellers can also benefit from this system, albeit under different terms and costs. Travellers arriving by land or cruise ship, however, still need to apply for a conventional visa.
In addition to the three international airports, you can also enter Myanmar through various land border crossings with an ETA, including Tachileik, Myawaddy, Kawthaung, Tamu, and Rih Khaw Dar.
The ETA is issued as a number code that you must print out and present upon entry. Note that your stay is limited to a maximum of 28 days, and extending or re-entering with this type of visa is not possible.
