Since 2014, it has been possible to enter India with an electronic India visa. This requires an online registration which officially must be completed at least four days before the date of entry (though in practice, one to two days may suffice with express processing) and is stamped into your passport upon arrival in India.

Entry via land routes is not possible with an electronic visa. Visits to protected/restricted areas and cantonment areas require additional permissions.
