Short answer

For many short tourism or business trips, a British citizen passport can enter Vietnam visa-free up to 45 days (GOV.UK). Details: visa exemption guide.
If you need to stay longer than 45 days, or you want the e-visa path GOV.UK describes (90-day stay · multiple entries), plan a Vietnam eVisa.
From 15 August 2023, Vietnam Tourism states e-visas are available to citizens of all countries/territories, with 90-day duration and multiple entry.
Passport basics: expiry at least 6 months after arrival, 2 blank pages, same passport in and out (GOV.UK).

When UK travellers use an eVisa

Use this pillar when the 45-day visa exemption is not enough for your plan — for example a longer stay, or when you specifically need the 90-day multiple-entry e-visa option.

GOV.UK lists longer-stay options that include a pre-approval letter path, other visa types from the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, and an e-visa allowing a 90-day stay and multiple entries. For most UK leisure and short business travellers who need electronic permission before travel, the eVisa is the default assisted path on 1avisas.co.uk.

Important eVisa caveats from GOV.UK:

E-visas restrict you to the entry and exit points you select when applying.
If you obtain an e-visa while already in Vietnam, you must exit and re-enter to start it.

Passport with expiry at least 6 months after the date you arrive, at least 2 blank pages, and no damage (GOV.UK).
Enter and exit using the same passport.

Carry whatever approval printout or digital proof the official process requires when you travel. Check your stamp dates at the border if you later rely on visa-free or visa exit dates.

Vietnam Tourism directs travellers to apply via the Vietnam e-Visa Official Website. The government interface commonly used online is evisa.gov.vn. Prefer that real government channel for DIY; confirm you are on the live Immigration eVisa site before submitting payment.

Digital Arrival Card reminder

A Digital Arrival Card is not a visa and not a substitute for an eVisa (or for the 45-day exemption decision). From 15 April 2026, GOV.UK says foreign nationals entering via Tan Son Nhat (SGN) are encouraged to complete it online before arrival — not currently mandatory for SGN, but rules may change.
