Important guidance for British travellers
New requirement
India e-Arrival Card
Since 2026, all travellers entering India โ including British citizens and OCI cardholders โ must complete an online e-Arrival Card within 72 hours of their flight. It generates a QR code scanned at immigration and is a separate requirement from your eVisa.
Learn moreCarry your authorisation
Keep both a printed and digital copy of your eVisa throughout your journey. Border officers and airline staff at check-in may request it at any point.
Learn moreApply at least 4โ7 days in advance
Most eVisas are approved within 72 hours, but the Indian government recommends applying at least 4 days before travel. We recommend 7โ10 days for peace of mind.
Learn moreCheck your port of entry
The India eVisa is valid only at 31 designated airports and 6 seaports, and is not accepted at land borders. Confirm your entry point is on the approved list before booking.
Learn morePrepare for immigration
Have proof of onward travel and confirmed accommodation ready before you board. Overstaying your visa, even by a day, may result in fines or future entry restrictions.
Learn moreRestricted areas
Some regions require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) in addition to your eVisa. This includes parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Learn moreStays exceeding 180 days
If you plan to stay longer than 180 days, you must register with the FRRO within 14 days of arrival. Failure to do so may affect your ability to leave India.
Learn morePakistani-origin British citizens
Pakistani-origin applicants cannot apply for an Indian eVisa online. You must apply for a paper visa in person at the Indian High Commission. Please check the official Indian High Commission website for the latest requirements before applying.
OCI cardholders
A valid OCI card allows entry on your British passport without a separate visa. A PIO card is no longer accepted and must be converted to OCI before travel.
Learn moreBritish passport eligibility
The eVisa is available to British Citizens only. British Subjects, British Protected Persons, British Overseas Citizens, BN(O) holders, and British Dependent Territories Citizens are not eligible.

Do British citizens need a visa for India?
Yes. British citizens must obtain a visa before travelling to India. Most travellers apply for an India eVisa online, which covers tourism, business, medical treatment and conferences. The eVisa is available to British Citizens only โ other British passport types such as BN(O) or British Overseas Citizens are not eligible.
India visa requirements for UK citizens 2026
To apply for an India eVisa you will need: a valid British passport with at least six months' validity beyond your travel dates, a recent passport-style photo meeting India's technical specifications, a return or onward travel itinerary, and a debit or credit card for payment. Since 2026, all travellers must also complete a separate e-Arrival Card within 72 hours of their flight.
How long does an India visa take from the UK?
Most India eVisas are approved within 72 hours. The Indian government recommends applying at least 4 days before travel. We recommend applying 7โ10 days in advance to allow time for any corrections.
How long can UK citizens stay in India?
This depends on your visa type. A Tourist eVisa allows stays of 30 to 180 days per visit depending on the validity option chosen. A Business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit. A Medical eVisa allows up to 60 days. You cannot extend your stay beyond the permitted period without leaving and re-entering.
How do I apply for an India eVisa from the UK?
You can apply through the Indian government's official portal or through a specialist service like ours. The process involves completing an online form, uploading your photo and passport scan, and paying the visa fee. We guide you through each step, check your documents and submit on your behalf โ most applications are completed in under 12 minutes.
Can I get an India visa on arrival?
No. India does not offer a visa on arrival for British citizens. You must obtain an eVisa before you travel. Arriving without a valid visa will result in being refused entry.
How much does an India eVisa cost for UK citizens?
The Indian government charges a visa fee that varies by visa type and season. For a 30-day Tourist eVisa, the government fee is typically $25 USD during peak periods. Our prices start from ยฃ39.95, which includes the government visa fee, our service fee and all applicable taxes. For a full breakdown of visa types, processing times and prices, visit our India visa fees page.
How many times can I enter India on an eVisa?
This depends on the visa type. A Tourist eVisa issued for 30 days allows double entry. Longer-validity Tourist eVisas and Business eVisas allow multiple entries. A Conference eVisa allows single entry only.
Can I extend my India eVisa once I'm in the country?
No. India eVisas cannot be extended once you are in the country. If you need to stay longer, you must leave India and apply for a new visa. We recommend planning your trip carefully within your permitted stay.
Can I get an India eVisa if I was born in Pakistan?
No. British citizens of Pakistani origin are not eligible for an India eVisa. You will need to apply for a sticker visa in person at the Indian High Commission in London. Processing times are substantially longer than for standard eVisa applications.
