The "Short-Term" China Student Visa (X2 Visa) for Study Stays up to 180 Days
The "short-term" China Student Visa is required for engaging in activities like language courses or courses in traditional Chinese medicine in China that do not exceed 180 days in duration. It can be extended for the same period for which it was originally issued, provided the course or studies are continued. However, the total stay in China must not exceed 360 days.

Documents Required to Apply for the Short-Term Student Visa:
- Completed visa application (exclusively online since May 2019)
- Coloured, biometric passport photo against a light background (digitally inserted into the online form and optionally printed on photo paper, approx. 1.4 x 1.8 inches)
- Passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity and one blank page for the visa (two blank pages are necessary for double or multiple entries)
- An admission letter from the university or academy where you will commence your studies. The admission letter must include the full address of the institution on the letterhead, as well as your name, date of birth, and the start and end dates of your course. It must also be signed and stamped with a registered seal. The admission letter is issued in China, scanned, and emailed to the UK as an attachment. An original is not required for the visa application.
Validity and Duration of the Short-Term Student Visa:
The short-term student visa allows for a single entry into China within 90 days of visa issuance for the duration of the enrolled course, i.e., for a maximum of 180 days. Upon continuation of the course and presentation of the relevant documentation, the visa can be extended once for the same duration for which it was initially issued. The total stay in China, however, must not exceed 360 days. The short-term student visa is always issued for a single entry into China. Therefore, short trips to Hong Kong or neighboring countries are not possible.
